    The 3-step rollover process explained

Hey everyone, I've been a silent reader here for a while, just soaking up all the great advice. My late husband, God rest his soul, was always so meticulous with our finances, and frankly, I'm trying my best to continue his legacy. He set up a Gold IRA for us a few years back, and it’s always been right around the $75,000 mark. We have a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maple Leafs, all coins he was really proud of.

I'm looking at our latest statement, and the storage fees just jumped out at me. They seem... higher than I remember? Or maybe I'm just more aware of every penny now. I know with a depository, there are always going to be fees, but I'm trying to wrap my head around what’s 'normal' for a portfolio this size. Especially since I'm not bringing in new capital, I just want to protect what we have. It’s hard enough maintaining everything without unexpected costs eating into it.

We're in Raleigh, NC, and the depository is out in Delaware. It's an established place, fully insured, all the checkboxes my husband put so much emphasis on. I just don't know if I should be calling them to question the fees, or if this is just how it is. It's a percentage, I believe, based on the total value. Has anyone else seen their storage fees fluctuate with the market value of their gold? Or are there generally flat fees people prefer?

I guess I’m just looking for some reassurance or, failing that, a reality check. What do you all typically pay for storing gold coins in your IRAs? Are there different fee structures I should be asking about? I’ve been trying to educate myself more, and I saw a mention of a Learning Center at https://learn.goldirablueprint.com/?forum. I’m planning on diving into that this week, but some real-world experiences from this community would be invaluable right now. Thanks in advance for any insights you can share.

My advisor told me 10-15% in gold is the sweet spot but I went heavier. We'll see how it plays out.

Sorry for your loss. I'm just curious, was the setup with your husband a home storage IRA or was it with a third-party depository? If it was the latter, have you looked into what it would take to transfer those coins to a different custodian?

I totally get how you feel. My dad was the same way, always had everything perfectly organized and then when he passed, it was like, "Okay, now what was that about?"

I remember trying to figure out the best way to store some of his old collectible coins. I looked into a few different options and the fees were all over the place. What really helped me was just calling up a couple of different places and asking them to break down ALL the costs, not just the advertised storage fee. Sometimes there are insurance costs or withdrawal fees that they don't always put front and center.

It's totally understandable to feel a bit lost with all the different fee structures out there. But honestly, sometimes the emphasis on avoiding ANY storage fees can be a bit overblown.

For a truly secure, insured vault, a small fee is often a necessary cost of doing business. It's not like you're just stashing it under your mattress, right? The peace of mind and protection against theft or loss often outweighs the minor expense. Think of it as paying for professional security for a valuable asset.

Genuinely curious — has anyone here actually tried to liquidate from their gold IRA? How smooth was that process?

Interesting take. I've heard the opposite from a few people though — would love to see some actual numbers on this.

I was pretty skeptical about another gold IRA forum but the tools here on GIRAB actually surprised me — the calculator alone saved me hours of spreadsheet work.

Ngl I came here expecting the usual affiliate spam but the discussions are actually decent. Way better info than what I was getting from my old advisor.

I rolled over about $80k last year. Honestly the hardest part was just picking which metals to hold. Still second-guessing myself.
