I've been a Gold IRA investor for a couple of years now, ever since not long after my dear husband passed. He'd always invested in precious metals, even had a small stash in the house, and I really see this as carrying on his legacy, trying to be smart with the money he worked so hard for. I'm sitting on about $75k in my Gold IRA right now, and honestly, the market volatility has me feeling a bit antsy even with gold.
Lately, I've been doing a lot more reading into the whole "physical gold versus paper gold" debate again. When I first set up the IRA, it was mostly about getting the peace of mind knowing I had something tangible, something that isn't just numbers on a screen. Having that actual proof of ownership, even if it's stored in a vault somewhere reputable, really appeals to me. I'm thinking about the future, long-term stability, and frankly, a bit of that doomsday prepping mentality you see pop up sometimes.
My current setup is all physical, held in a secure depository. But every now and then, I look at the ease of something like a gold ETF or mining stock, and wonder if I'm leaving efficiency on the table. Of course, the whole point for me is not to be exposed to corporate risk or counterparty risk if things really go sideways. That's why I'm leaning heavily towards holding physical, even with the added storage fees. For me, it’s about protecting what’s left and growing it safely for my grandchildren, not making a quick buck.
Are any of you out there grappling with this too? Especially those of you who might be managing things for your later years or trying to preserve wealth for family. What are your strong feelings about physical versus paper gold in an IRA? And for my Raleigh, NC neighbors, any local insights into this, or maybe even good financial advisors who understand this specific niche?
