Starting to eye platinum - am I crazy?
- •Been thinking a lot about diversifying outside of just gold in my IRA, especially with all the talk about precious metals recently.
- •My gold allocation is pretty solid, probably around $75k right now after adding a decent chunk last year.
- •But honestly, watching the gold price just kinda… do its thing, I’m wondering if I’m missing out on an opportunity with platinum.
Been thinking a lot about diversifying outside of just gold in my IRA, especially with all the talk about precious metals recently. My gold allocation is pretty solid, probably around $75k right now after adding a decent chunk last year. But honestly, watching the gold price just kinda… do its thing, I’m wondering if I’m missing out on an opportunity with platinum.
My business is in agriculture here in Fresno, so I’m all about real assets, things you can hold and tangibly understand. Gold's always been my go-to for that, a hedge against inflation, etc. But platinum just seems so… quiet. It hasn’t had the same headlines as gold, hasn't seen the same speculative spikes. Yet, its industrial demand, especially with the push for greener tech and catalytic converters, seems like it's only going to go up. Am I wrong to think it's undervalued right now, just sitting there waiting for its moment?
I rolled over an old 401k into a Gold IRA a few years back, and it was a surprisingly smooth process. The hardest part was figuring out what I could actually transfer without getting slammed with taxes. There's a Tax Calculator I found at https://tax.goldirablueprint.com/ that actually helped me understand the implications of a partial rollover at the time. I'm wondering if a partial platinum play would be similarly straightforward in terms of tax implications?
My plan would be to maybe move 10-15k into platinum, nothing huge, just dipping my toes in. I’m thinking long-term, like I did with my gold. What are folks' thoughts on this? Is anyone here already holding platinum in their IRA? What's your experience been like, and what made you decide to go that route instead of just sticking with the more traditional gold and silver?
