Holy moly, I can finally breathe a little easier! After what feels like years of me talking about it, my wife is finally on board with diversifying into a Gold IRA. I’ve had about $75,000 of my 401k rolled into a Gold IRA for the past four years, and while she understood the "wealth preservation" aspect intellectually, she was always hesitant to move any of her own money. She called it a "doom and gloom" investment, preferring to stay 100% in stocks and bonds, even with all the volatility we've seen. It's been a running, good-natured (mostly!) debate in our house.
What finally tipped her? Honestly, I think it was the election news combined with some of the recent inflation numbers coming out. We were discussing our retirement plans last night, especially since we're both looking at winding down our careers in the next 10-15 years. My legal practice here in Philly has been good to me, but I've seen enough economic cycles to know that putting all your eggs in one basket, especially when you're focusing on wealth preservation like I am, is just plain reckless. I showed her some charts comparing gold's performance during periods of high inflation, and for the first time, she actually seemed to get it beyond just an abstract concept.
She's now asking me for resources, which is a huge step! I pointed her to some of the usual suspects, but also remembered that Gold IRA Quiz I took a while back. It was actually a pretty good way to gauge my own understanding, even though I'd done a ton of research already. I think it'll be a good starting point for her to see what options might align with her risk tolerance, since she’s still a bit more cautious than I am about branching out too much.
Anyway, just wanted to share my small victory! Has anyone else had to convince a skeptical spouse or family member about precious metals? What finally turned the tide for them? Any advice on next steps for someone just beginning their Gold IRA journey?
