So, about that 401k to Gold IRA move... totally worth it for this old-timer
- •Been seeing a lot of chatter lately on diversifying out of traditional paper assets, and figured I'd chime in with my experience.
- •I officially retired from the Street a few years back – did my 30+ years, saw enough booms and busts to last a lifetime.
- •My portfolio, which is now sitting pretty between $3-4 million, used to be heavily weighted in the usual suspects: stocks, bonds, some real estate.
Been seeing a lot of chatter lately on diversifying out of traditional paper assets, and figured I'd chime in with my experience. I officially retired from the Street a few years back – did my 30+ years, saw enough booms and busts to last a lifetime. My portfolio, which is now sitting pretty between $3-4 million, used to be heavily weighted in the usual suspects: stocks, bonds, some real estate. But I always had a soft spot for metals, a holdover from my early days, before the digital age swallowed everything whole.
A few years before I hung up my cleats, I started seriously looking into rolling over a significant chunk of my 401k into a Gold IRA. Had about $750k in that 401k at the time, and the market felt… frothy, even for a guy who’d made his living in it. The process itself wasn't as mind-numbingly complicated as I’d feared, though it definitely required some due diligence to pick the right custodian and make sure everything was above board with the IRS. Ended up moving about 60% of that 401k into various gold coins – mostly American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs. Holding those physical assets, even if they're stored in a vault, just gives a different kind of peace of mind than watching numbers flash on a screen.
Now, I’m sitting here in my NYC apartment, watching the news, and feeling pretty damn good about that decision. The immediate gratification wasn't the point, of course. It was about long-term wealth preservation, especially with all the uncertainty swirling around these days. My overall allocation to metals is probably north of 30% now, maybe even approaching 40% depending on daily fluctuations. It's a heavy bet, I know, but it aligns with my personal philosophy on wealth in this crazy world.
Curious to hear if anyone else here has made a similar move with a significant portion of their retirement funds. What were your primary motivations? And for those still considering, have you checked out any of those online Gold IRA Calculators to get a rough idea of what your potential returns or IRA value could look like? Sometimes seeing those numbers laid out can be a real eye-opener.
