Smooth 401k to Gold IRA Rollover - Anyone Else Feeling Bullish?
- •I've been eyeing this move for a while, especially with the inflation numbers we've been seeing and the general market volatility.
- •I allocated about a third of that, around $250k, into physical gold within the IRA.
- •The custodian I went with was pretty on the ball.
Just wrapped up the direct rollover of a chunk of my old 401k into a gold IRA, and honestly, the process was significantly smoother than I anticipated. I've been eyeing this move for a while, especially with the inflation numbers we've been seeing and the general market volatility. Had about $750k sitting in an old employer's plan that wasn't performing to my liking, and decided it was time to diversify away from just paper assets. I allocated about a third of that, around $250k, into physical gold within the IRA.
The custodian I went with was pretty on the ball. Once I got the ball rolling, they coordinated directly with the 401k administrator. Minimal paperwork on my end, which was a huge relief given how busy things get managing the fund here in Greenwich. The funds transferred within about two weeks, and the selection of eligible bullion was decent. I opted for mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples for good measure. Seeing that physical allocation now within my retirement portfolio just gives me a different kind of peace of mind. It’s a foundational hedge, pure and simple.
Anyone else here recently made a similar move? What were your experiences with custodian choice or the types of metals you opted for? I know some folks swear by specific coins for numismatic value, but for me, it was purely about the intrinsic value and long-term wealth preservation. I'm thinking about doing another tranche later this year if the macroeconomic picture continues its current trajectory.
I find it interesting how some of my peers still view physical gold as a "boomer" investment, but given the current geopolitical landscape and the sheer amount of money printing globally, I see it as a pretty prescient move. Am I crazy for feeling so confident about this? Would love to hear other perspectives, especially from those who've been holding physical assets in their IRAs for a while. What's your long-term outlook?
