Been seeing a lot of folks asking about gold vs. silver allocations lately, and figured I’d throw my two cents in after a good twenty years of being in the precious metals game. I’m an auto industry retiree out here in Detroit; saw a lot of ups and downs in that career, enough to make me really appreciate a tangible asset. My portfolio’s sitting somewhere in the $750k range these days, and a good chunk of that is in my Gold IRA. When I first started, I was probably 90% gold, 10% silver, just because gold felt like the ultimate safe haven.
Over the years, especially during those volatile periods like '08 or even just watching the regular economic jitters, I started to really see silver's potential. It's more volatile, no doubt about it, which can be a bit of a nail-biter if you're not used to it. But that volatility also means bigger percentage gains when things swing up. I’ve slowly adjusted my allocation over time, and I’m currently sitting around 70% gold, 30% silver in my Gold IRA. I like the balance – gold for that rock-solid foundation and long-term wealth preservation, and silver for its industrial demand and a bit more speculative growth potential. Plus, when silver gets hammered, I tend to buy a bit more, just like I did last year when it dipped. Felt like a good opportunity.
For those of you with significant holdings, how have your allocations shifted over your investment journey? Are you more aggressive with silver now than you were a decade ago? And for those just starting out or considering a Gold IRA, what weighting are you leaning towards and why? Always curious to hear other investors' perspectives on this.
