Been seeing a lot of chatter lately about silver, and honestly, it’s got me thinking about my own strategy. For years, my primary allocation has been gold, specifically through a Gold IRA. I started that back in 2012 when things felt…unpredictable. It’s been a solid performer, and frankly, a huge psychological comfort knowing a portion of my net worth isn’t tied to the whims of the market. We’re talking a significant sum, well over seven figures, parked securely.
My silver journey, however, is a bit different. It’s less about the core inflation hedge and more about the industrial demand story and the higher volatility play. I started dipping my toes in around 2016, mostly through physical holdings – some American Eagles, Canadian Maples, and a few Kilo bars from a trusted dealer down in Florida. Nothing huge, maybe 500-600 ounces total. I also have a smaller position in PSLV for the liquidity and ease of storage. It's probably only about 2-3% of my total precious metals allocation, which itself is a slice of a larger, diversified portfolio (think Greenwich, CT kind of diversified).
The recent price action has been interesting, to say the least. I haven't added much in the past year, feeling like the industrial recovery hasn't quite kicked in with the gusto I’d hoped for, and the geopolitical premium hasn't been as pronounced as with gold. Part of me wonders if I should be increasing my exposure now, especially with the talk of future energy demands. But then I look at the volatility and think, "Is this where I want to be adding significant capital, or should I just stick to my rebalancing plan?"
So, for those of you who are serious silver stackers, what's your current playbook? Are you loading up on physical, or are you more focused on ETFs or even mining stocks? What percentage of your overall portfolio do you dedicate to silver? And crucially, what's your long-term thesis that keeps you committed? Just curious to hear different perspectives outside my usual hedge fund circle – sometimes the retail insights are surprisingly sharp.
