Silver's Industrial Demand - What Are We Missing?

    Key Takeaways
    • With the push for solar, EVs, and all sorts of fancy electronics, you’d think silver would be screaming upwards given its essential role.
    • I mean, analysts are constantly revising their forecasts for renewable energy growth.
    • If even half of that comes to fruition, the sheer volume of silver needed for photovoltaics alone is immense.

Been thinking a lot lately about how the industrial side of silver plays into its price, especially with all the talk about green tech and electrification. I’ve held a pretty steady allocation in silver for years (my metals weighting is comfortably over 30% of my portfolio), and while the safe-haven aspect is evergreen, it feels like the industrial demand is often a bit of an afterthought in retail discussions. With the push for solar, EVs, and all sorts of fancy electronics, you’d think silver would be screaming upwards given its essential role.

I mean, analysts are constantly revising their forecasts for renewable energy growth. If even half of that comes to fruition, the sheer volume of silver needed for photovoltaics alone is immense. Then you've got automotive, 5G infrastructure, medical... it just keeps piling up. As someone who sat on a trading desk downtown for decades, I’m used to seeing supply/demand dynamics play out a little more... dramatically. Are the projections for industrial use overblown? Or is the supply side just able to keep pace far better than we realize, suppressing prices?

My concern, looking out a few years, is whether the market is truly pricing in this increasing industrial consumption. With inflation still a nagging worry even here in NYC, and the dollar’s long-term trajectory always a question mark, silver should theoretically be a no-brainer. But it’s not exactly rocket ship material. Anyone else feeling this disconnect? Are we, as investors, underestimating the ability of miners to ramp up production to meet this demand, or is the future industrial supercycle for silver still just around the corner, waiting for that tipping point?

Totally get what you're saying. I had a similar lightbulb moment a few years back when I was looking into solar panel manufacturing. It's not just the green tech, but also the sheer volume of everyday electronics that use silver. Made me feel a lot more confident in my own silver holdings knowing there's a constant, and growing, industrial appetite for it beyond just investment demand.

This is a great point! I've been wondering the same thing. You mentioned your metals weighting is comfortably over 30% – is that mostly physical silver, or do you dabble in silver mining stocks or ETFs as well?

Interesting point about industrial demand. While it's definitely a factor, I sometimes wonder if we overstate its immediate impact on silver's price movements compared to gold. Gold's industrial demand is pretty negligible, yet it moves significantly. Maybe silver's price is still more driven by its monetary/safe-haven aspects, just on a smaller scale than gold, and industrial use acts more like a long-term undercurrent than a daily driver?

This is a solid point, and the industrial demand for silver is definitely a crucial, sometimes overlooked, aspect. It's not just about the shiny stack, right?

One thing I've found super helpful is looking at reports from organizations like the Silver Institute. They often put out detailed breakdowns of demand by sector (solar, EVs, etc.), which can give you a better idea of the underlying trends beyond just investment demand. Might be useful for your continued research!
