Okay, so I'm trying to fine-tune my precious metals holdings within my IRA, and I've hit a bit of a snag regarding silver. I've got a decent chunk of my portfolio in gold (think 10-15% of my overall 800k portfolio), with a good mix of physical and a smaller amount in an ETF. But I'm looking to add some silver, and the question of American Silver Eagles vs. generic silver rounds for the IRA is really bugging me.
My Gold IRA custodian (Monex, for those wondering) obviously accepts both, but there's a pretty noticeable premium on the Eagles. I'm a doctor here in Boston, so I appreciate the legal tender status and the government backing of the Eagles. It feels "safer" somehow, even if it's just psychological. But that premium stings, especially when you're looking at a multi-thousand dollar investment. For a tangible asset that I'm primarily holding for its intrinsic value and as an inflation hedge, that extra cost feels like it eats into my potential upside.
On the other hand, generic rounds are appealing from a pure cost perspective. Same amount of silver, much lower premium. The downside is the lack of government guarantee and potentially less liquidity if I needed to sell quickly – though for an IRA, quick selling isn't really the primary goal, right? I'm thinking long-term here, probably until I retire in another 10-15 years. Any of you folks in similar positions gone with generics over Eagles in your IRA? Did you ever regret it?
I'm leaning towards a mix, maybe a smaller portion in Eagles for the "security" and the bulk in generics to maximize my silver weight. But I'd love to hear some perspectives from others who've wrestled with this. Is the Eagle premium truly worth it for the IRA, or am I overthinking the "safety" aspect for a pure silver play?
