I'm looking to add some silver to my Gold IRA this year, probably around the 10-15k mark, and I'm wrestling with the classic Eagles vs. generic question. I work as an exec secretary for one of the oil companies here in Tulsa, and I've picked up a lot of knowledge from listening to the higher-ups talk about diversifying and hedging inflation. That's why I'm here now, trying to figure out the best move for my own retirement savings.
My current portfolio is sitting comfortably between $150k and $200k, mostly in my 401k and the Gold IRA I started a couple of years ago. I'm definitely leaning towards generics because of the lower premium. I mean, every dollar saved on premium is a dollar that can buy more actual silver, right? And for an investment vehicle like an IRA, where the goal is long-term growth and protection, I don't see the point in paying extra for the "collectability" of an Eagle if I'm not planning to collect them.
On the other hand, I hear all the time about how Eagles are more liquid and recognized. Does that really matter when it comes to selling through an IRA custodian? Aren't they just going to value it based on the silver content anyway? I'm picturing a scenario 20 years down the line when I actually need to draw from this, and I just want the most straightforward, metal-price-based transaction possible.
So, for those of you who've made this decision for your own IRAs, especially if your portfolio size is in a similar ballpark, what did you go with and why? Did anyone regret paying the extra for Eagles or wish they'd paid up for easier resale? Any horror stories with generics in an IRA I should know about? Love to hear some real-world experiences!
