Thought I'd share a bit about my silver stacking journey, especially seeing a lot of new folks asking about physical precious metals. I started really getting into silver about 5 years ago, right after I left my bank manager gig here in Portland. Being on the inside of the financial system for so long gave me a perspective that a lot of people don't get – namely, how fragile things can feel when you see the machinations up close. That's when I decided to really diversify my own portfolio, which is hovering around the $350k mark these days, with a significant chunk now in physical metals.

My strategy for silver is pretty straightforward: I aim for a mix of larger bars (10oz and 100oz) for the lower premiums, and then a decent percentage in 1oz rounds and American Silver Eagles for liquidity and divisibility. I'm not chasing crazy numismatic value; it's all about the melt value and the hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty. I've been slowly DCAing into silver over the years, picking up a little bit each month. It’s been fascinating to watch the spot price fluctuate, and honestly, some of those dips felt like real opportunities. I'm always looking at the gold-to-silver ratio too, trying to rebalance if silver looks particularly undervalued compared to gold.

One thing I've found super helpful for anyone on the fence about asset allocation, especially within an IRA, is using tools like the Gold IRA Calculator. Even though I primarily stack physical outside of an IRA, I’ve used it to model potential returns if I were to move more into a precious metals IRA. It’s pretty insightful for visualizing how different scenarios might play out over time. It really makes you think about long-term growth and protection.

What are your thoughts on silver versus gold for diversification? Are any of you primarily silver stackers, or do you prefer the big yellow metal? Always interested to hear other strategies, especially from folks who’ve been in the game longer than I have. How do you store your larger bars, and have you ever had to sell any of your stack?

Interesting read! I totally get the appeal of silver, especially coming from a traditional finance background. Diversification is key. But I've always leaned more towards gold myself for the long haul.

Historically, gold has just had a more consistent track record as a store of value, and the gold-to-silver ratio tends to favor gold over time. While silver has its moments for bigger swings, gold feels like the safer bet for pure wealth preservation. Just my two cents, though!

Awesome post! I've been on a similar journey, though less strategically, haha. Started dabbling in silver maybe 3-4 years ago after seeing friends talk about it. Mostly just got a few ounces here and there when I had some extra cash. Definitely felt a different kind of security with physical holdings after being in tech for so long and seeing how digital everything is.

I'm nowhere near as organized as you sound, but it's cool to see how others approach it. Might need to borrow some of your tactics!

Interesting! So you started stacking right after leaving the bank. Did anything specific you saw or learned *inside* the financial system influence your decision to get into physical precious metals?
