Alright, so I’ve been sitting on a sizeable chunk of capital for a while now, mostly in various equity and bond plays, but the current market volatility is making me seriously re-evaluate strategies. I'm a partner at a fund here in Greenwich, and honestly, the chatter around inflation and geopolitical instability is getting to me. I’ve always had a small personal allocation to physical gold, maybe 2-3% of my total liquid assets, but it's always been direct purchases and storage. Now I'm looking hard at a Gold IRA, thinking about moving maybe $500k-$1M into it as a true hedge against... well, everything.
My main concern right now is the logistics and finding a trustworthy custodian/dealer. I'm comfortable with the investment thesis for gold as a long-term store of value, especially given the current global economic outlook. What I'm less comfortable with is the practical side of setting up an IRA for precious metals. Are there preferred custodians that folks here have had good experiences with? I’m looking for something bulletproof, transparent fee structures, and, ideally, a seamless transfer process from my existing brokerage accounts.
Also, any thoughts on particular types of gold to hold within the IRA? My current physical holdings are mostly Eagles and Buffalos, but I’m open to other IRS-approved options if there are liquidity or premium advantages. And for those who’ve gone through this, what were the biggest pitfalls you encountered? I'm trying to preempt any headaches down the line. Appreciate any insights, especially from anyone who's done a significant rollover or direct contribution.
