SDIRA vs. Traditional Custodian for Gold - My Experience

I've been managing my late husband's legacy for a few years now, and a big part of that has been making sure our investments are protected. We always talked about having something tangible, something that felt real in our portfolio, especially with all the volatility lately. That's why I looked into a Gold IRA. Initially, I just went with a traditional custodian that my financial advisor recommended, thinking it would be simpler.
Honestly, it felt a little hands-off. They handled everything, which was nice at first, but I quickly realized I wanted more control, especially over the specific types of gold we were holding. When you're talking about a portfolio that's currently sitting around $75,000 in precious metals, you want to be sure you're getting exactly what you want, you know? I started doing my own research from my home here in Raleigh and stumbled upon the idea of a self-directed IRA (SDIRA).
It's been a game-changer. With the SDIRA, I have so much more say. I can pick the specific bullion dealers and even different types of coins or bars that I'm more comfortable with, versus just accepting what the traditional custodian offered. It feels much more aligned with how my husband and I always discussed our investments – being actively involved. The peace of mind knowing I've personally vetted the process and made the choices feels incredibly important for protecting his hard work.
My question for everyone here is, for those of you with precious metals in an IRA, how many of you opted for a traditional custodian versus a self-directed one? What were your primary reasons? And for those who went the SDIRA route, did you find the initial setup more complicated than you expected? I'm always looking to learn from others' experiences, especially when it comes to safeguarding our financial future.
