Been seeing a lot of posts lately from people worried about the current economic climate, and honestly, it really takes me back. I wanted to share a bit of my own journey, especially for those who might be feeling a bit nervous about their gold investments. I run a tourism business here in Savannah, and let me tell you, we’ve seen more ups and downs than a rollercoaster. Back in the day, after the '08 crash, I decided I needed to diversify beyond just real estate and stocks, which had taken a serious hit. That's when I first looked into a Gold IRA, specifically focusing on gold coins.
I started with around $50k back in 2011, mostly American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maples. I wasn't expecting fireworks, just a solid hedge. Over the years, I kept adding to it, especially during dips, building it up to somewhere around $150k by 2018. It wasn't always smooth sailing, and there were definitely times I wondered if I was doing the right thing, especially when the stock market was flying high. But I stuck with it, weathering things like the pandemic shutdowns which absolutely crushed my business for a bit, but my gold holdings were a comforting counterweight.
Fast forward to today, and while I wouldn't call myself a millionaire from gold alone, my portfolio is easily over the $250k mark, maybe closer to $275k depending on the day. That’s a significant chunk of change from my initial investment and subsequent contributions. It's provided a real sense of security during uncertain times, allowing me to keep investing in my business and not feel completely exposed. For anyone on the fence or just starting out, my advice is to be patient and have a long-term view. Gold isn't a get-rich-quick scheme, but it's been an incredible stabilizer and growth driver for me.
What are some of your long-term success stories with gold? Any other tourism business owners out there using gold to hedge against seasonal or economic downturns?
