Been thinking a lot about the Roth vs. Traditional Gold IRA debate lately, especially with the way things are shaping up globally. I rolled over about $700k into a Gold IRA a few years back when I retired from active duty – seen enough financial instability in the Pacific theater to know I needed some real tangible assets. Originally, I went Traditional for the immediate tax break, which was significant at the time. With my military pension and a few other small income streams, it kept my taxable income a bit lower while I adjusted to civilian life here in paradise. No complaints about that decision then.
But now, I’m getting older, and the RMD clock is ticking. I've been using that RMD Calculator on Gold IRA Blueprint to figure out what those distributions will start looking like, and honestly, the thought of paying taxes on potentially appreciated gold in retirement isn't exactly thrilling. Had I gone Roth from the start, those distributions would be tax-free. Hindsight is 20/20, I know, but it makes me wonder if I should have bitten the bullet on taxes back then. With the way government spending is going, who knows what tax rates will be in 10-15 years when I really start drawing from it. Feels like a bet against future tax hikes, which seems like a losing proposition these days.
My younger son, who's just starting his career, asked me for advice on his own retirement planning. He's got a small amount he's looking to put into a Gold IRA – maybe $50k to start. I'm leaning heavily towards telling him to go Roth. He's got decades until retirement, so that gold has plenty of time to grow tax-free. Plus, who wants to worry about RMDs and tax planning when you’re trying to enjoy your golden years? I’ve seen firsthand how quickly economic landscapes can shift; having that tax-free access to your wealth seems like a massive advantage.
For those of you with significant gold holdings in your IRAs, what was your rationale for choosing Roth or Traditional? Are any of you considering a Roth conversion now, even if it means a tax hit? Curious about other perspectives, especially from those who have been through the RMD process already. It's a different ballgame when you're actually drawing down your assets.
