Roth vs. Traditional Gold IRA - What's the play?
- •Been wrestling with this for a few days now, and figured I'd throw it out to the hive mind.

Been wrestling with this for a few days now, and figured I'd throw it out to the hive mind. I'm looking to roll over another chunk of my old 401k – probably another 150k or so – into a Gold IRA. I’m heavily allocated in metals already, probably 60% of my ~2.5M portfolio is physical or paper gold/silver. I retired from Wall Street a few years back, so income isn't what it once was, but living in NYC, especially with property taxes, means I'm still in a decent tax bracket.
The core question is Roth vs. Traditional. On one hand, I like the idea of tax-free withdrawals in retirement with a Roth, especially if prices continue to skyrocket like I expect. My current income is lower than it was pre-retirement, but still not low, if you catch my drift. On the other, the immediate tax deduction from a Traditional IRA is appealing for income reduction now. I’ve always been a fan of kicking the can down the road, if it makes sense with taxes, but with gold, it feels different somehow.
Anyone else in a similar boat, or have strong opinions on which direction to lean for a significant gold IRA conversion? Are there any hidden pitfalls I'm not considering for a high-value precious metals IRA that would make one option definitively better than the other? I’m thinking long-term here, for my kids, mostly. It's not like I'm trying to fund my monthly espresso habit with this new account.
Oh, and on a related note, I was playing around with that Retirement Planner tool over at retire.goldirablueprint.com. It actually provided some interesting perspectives on how gold allocation impacts overall retirement income scenarios. Might be worth a look if you're trying to figure out your own long-term strategy for precious metals. Definitely helped me visualize some of the Roth vs. Traditional outcomes a bit clearer. What are your thoughts?
