Rollover Worries - Need some tax insight, Miami fam!

Okay, so I'm really starting to get serious about diversifying my retirement beyond just real estate (even though Miami property is usually a safe bet, haha). I've got about $180k sitting in an old 401k from a previous agency that I'm looking to roll into a Gold IRA. I've been doing my research, and the physical asset appeal just feels right for long-term security. But man, the tax implications are making my head spin a little.
I'm trying to figure out the smoothest, most tax-efficient way to do this. Is a direct rollover always the best bet to avoid immediate taxes and penalties? I’m 42, so definitely not at retirement age yet, and the last thing I need is to trigger some unforeseen tax event that eats into my principal. I've heard horror stories about folks messing up and getting hit with a 60-day rule penalty or accidentally taking a distribution instead of a rollover. What kind of paperwork should I be absolutely meticulous about, and are there any specific questions I should be asking the custodian of my old 401k and the new Gold IRA company?
Also, on the topic of diversification, I've been looking at silver too. It doesn't have quite the same appeal to me as gold, but it's hard to ignore sometimes. Has anyone here used that Silver vs Stocks tool? I was playing around with it yesterday for the 10-year period, and it definitely gave me some food for thought on how silver stacks up against the market. For those of you who've gone through a similar rollover, did you consider silver for your IRA, and what were your deciding factors?
Any advice from folks who've successfully navigated a Gold IRA rollover, especially regarding tax considerations, would be hugely appreciated. Trying to build this nest egg right!
