Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger on getting a Gold IRA set up. Been thinking about it for a while, especially with all the volatility lately – even out here on the farm, you feel the ripples. My financial advisor (who's been good, but a little slow on the gold front) helped me get the ball rolling to transfer about $150k from my old 401k through a direct rollover. That was almost two weeks ago now, and I’m just starting to get a little antsy about how long this is gonna take. I’m thinking about that Q1 performance and just trying to secure what I have.
The company I went with seemed reputable, decent reviews, and they walked me through all the steps for the metals selection. I chose a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples, just for a bit of diversity. Now it's just a waiting game, and frankly, I'm not a huge fan of waiting, especially when my money is in limbo. I run a horse farm here in Louisville – we're used to things moving, not sitting around in administrative processing land! I know these things take time, but what's a realistic expectation?
Anyone else here go through a 401k to Gold IRA direct rollover recently? What was your timeline like from initiation to actually seeing the metals in your account? Or even just seeing the funds officially out of your 401k and into the Gold IRA custodian? Are we talking a few weeks, a month, longer? My advisor said "a few weeks" but "a few" can mean a lot of things to different people.
Should I be calling my old 401k provider directly, or just let the Gold IRA custodian handle it? I don't want to nag, but I also don't want my capital just sitting around unallocated for longer than it needs to be. Any insights from folks who've been through this process would be greatly appreciated. Just trying to be practical about my wealth, you know?
