Just wanted to share my experience with a 401k to gold IRA rollover and see if anyone else had a similar timeline. I finally pulled the trigger on getting some physical gold into my retirement portfolio – felt like a smart move with the current economic climate, especially running my own little biz here in Denver and seeing some of the volatility. I had about $75k sitting pretty in an old 401k from a previous job, figured it was prime for transfer.

I initiated the direct rollover process about ten weeks ago. Ten! I was initially told it would be closer to 4-6 weeks, maybe 8 at a push. The paperwork itself was pretty straightforward, and the gold IRA company was super helpful on that front. But the back-and-forth between the old 401k administrator and the new custodian has been a nightmare. It felt like every other week there was some "missing form" or "signature clarification" needed. At one point, they said a check was mailed to the wrong address, which freaked me out a little, thinking about that much money floating around.

The money finally landed in the new account last week, and the precious metal purchase was executed pretty quickly after that. So, all told, we're looking at close to 2.5 months from start to finish. I'm relieved it's done, and I feel good about having some tangible assets, but man, the waiting game was stressful. Is this typical for a direct rollover? Did I just get unlucky with my old 401k provider being slow, or is this the new normal for these types of transfers? Trying to figure out if I just need to adjust my expectations for future moves.

Yeah, I had a similar experience with my Gold IRA rollover last year, took almost 6 weeks to get my ~$300k from my old 401k into the new account. The constant chasing was a pain. Did you get any clear explanation from your custodian about why it took so long, or was it just generic "processing delays"?

Hey, I hear you on the rollover taking time. It can definitely be a bit of a bureaucratic maze sometimes. Out of curiosity, did you consider a direct purchase of physical gold separate from an IRA? I know the tax advantages of an IRA are a big draw, but sometimes the simplicity of just buying gold directly can be appealing, especially if you're looking for quick access or don't mind not having it in a tax-advantaged account right away. Just something to think about for future diversification!

Oh man, YES. I swear mine felt like it was in purgatory for a good month and a half. The actual transfer of funds was quick, but the physical delivery of the metals? That's where things really slowed down. I kept calling and they were always super nice, but it didn't speed anything up. Glad it's all squared away now though, definitely feels good to have that diversification.

Oh man, hate to hear that it was a drag! When you say "way longer than expected," are we talking weeks longer or months? Just curious because I'm looking at doing something similar with my old 401k and trying to get a realistic idea of timelines. Hope it all worked out eventually for you!

Totally hear you on that one. My last Gold IRA rollover, the one where I moved a chunk of my old 401k from a previous employer, took nearly 6 weeks. I was getting pretty antsy, especially with the market volatility back then; it felt like watching paint dry while my principal was just sitting in limbo. The custodian blamed the old plan administrator for slow paperwork, but it still felt unnecessarily drawn out.

OMG, *yes*! Thought my Gold IRA rollover from a previous 401k would be a breeze, but it wasn't. They quoted me 2-3 weeks, and it ended up taking closer to 6, which felt like an eternity when you're watching the markets from my spot here in Vegas. Had about $180k making the jump, so every day felt like an age waiting for it to finally settle.

Had a surprisingly smooth 90-day direct rollover from a Freddie Mac 401k to a Gold IRA last summer, actually. My broker set up the LLC and even coordinated the physical shipment to Delaware Depository in just under two weeks, which honestly made me wonder if I'm just lucky or if some folks are working with less efficient custodians. 🤷‍♂️

I hear you on the rollover blues. My Gold IRA rollover from a previous 401k a couple of years back felt like it dragged on for ages too. What was supposed to be a 3-4 week process ended up being closer to 8, largely due to some paperwork snafu with my old plan administrator and their "snail mail only" policy for certain docs. Definitely gave me some anxiety sitting on that much cash ($70k at the time) for so long, especially with the market being so volatile. Next time, I'm going to be *all over* both companies from day one.

Ugh, don't even get me started on rollovers. Back in '22, my wife and I decided to move about $75,000 of our savings into a Gold IRA after seeing how volatile the market was getting. We were trying to time it before the Fed hiked rates again, thinking we were being clever. Three months that rollover took, three months of nail-biting, checking our accounts daily, and calling the custodian every other week from our kitchen table here in Kansas City. I swear, I almost pulled my hair out. Every time they said "two more weeks," my heart sank a little further, imagining gold prices just soaring past us. When it finally went through, it felt less like a financial transaction and more like a relief from a hostage situation.

@Michelle Collins I feel you on that, big time. My rollover from a traditional IRA, which was only about 20k at the time, took an agonizing 5 weeks. I was calling them almost daily from Charleston, wondering if my gold was ever going to actually land in the account. The relief when it finally did was HUGE.
