Rollover took longer than I thought - almost pulled my hair out!

Just wanted to share my experience with a 401k to Gold IRA rollover, partly to vent and partly to see if anyone else had a similar timeline. I’ve been in the casino industry here in Vegas for decades, so I’m no stranger to managing risk and understanding the long game. My portfolio is sitting in the low six figures, and with all the economic uncertainty, I decided it was time to move about 30% of my 401k into physical gold. The thought of having some tangible assets outside of the traditional financial system just felt right, especially with all the talk about inflation.

I started the process about two and a half months ago. Picked a reputable Gold IRA company after doing a ton of due diligence, got all the paperwork filled out, and figured this would be a fairly straightforward direct rollover. Nope. First, getting the old 401k administrator to cough up the funds felt like pulling teeth. They kept asking for more forms, confirming details, saying things were missing. It was like they were actively trying to discourage me. I called them probably six times, each time waiting on hold for ages. I get that they have processes, but this seriously tested my patience.

Then, once the funds finally cleared from the old custodian, it took another couple of weeks for the Gold IRA company to finalize the purchase and get the gold shipped to the depository. I was expecting maybe a month, tops, for the entire process from start to finish. Instead, it was closer to 10-11 weeks! For someone who's always dealing with high-stakes, fast-paced operations, this slow crawl was genuinely frustrating. I was constantly checking my email for updates, which were few and far between during some stages.

Has anyone else had rollovers take this long? Or did I just get unlucky with my particular 401k administrator? I'm curious if this is common or if I should have screamed a bit louder at some point. The gold rounds I eventually got look great, and I feel better having them, but that wait was rough!

Hey, glad to hear you got it sorted, even if it was a headache! Just curious, when you say "took longer than I thought," was that more about the actual processing time with the custodian, or were there delays in getting your funds out of your old 401k? I'm thinking of doing a similar rollover soon and trying to mentally prepare myself for the timeline.

Ugh, I feel this in my soul. My rollover wasn't for a Gold IRA, but a regular brokerage account, and it felt like it took FOREVER. I was constantly checking, calling, and just generally stressing out. It definitely had me questioning if I made the right choice, even though I knew it was for the best long-term. Glad to hear it finally went through for you!

Hey, I hear you on the rollover stress! But honestly, a lot of folks I know who've done Gold IRA rollovers actually plan for it to take a few weeks, sometimes even a month or two, especially with institutions that might be a bit slower on the uptake. It's not always a super speedy process like transferring money between bank accounts. Sometimes the "long game" with gold unfortunately applies to the transfer itself!

Man, you're not kidding. My rollover almost sent me to an early grave back in '19. Had about 700k sitting in a traditional 401k from my tech days here in Austin, watching the market climb and feeling like I was missing out on some real diversification. The *idea* of physical gold in an IRA felt right, a solid anchor. But the *process*? Ugh. I still remember the knot in my stomach every time I called the old custodian and got some unenthusiastic rep who clearly wanted to be anywhere else. Weeks turned into over a month, and I swear at one point they "lost" a form they distinctly told me they received. I started having vivid dreams of the market crashing while my funds were in limbo. The relief when those bars finally hit the vault confirmation was palpable – literally felt like I could breathe again after holding my breath for nearly two months. Hang in there, it’s worth it on the other side.

Man, I hear you on the rollover stress. My 401k to Gold IRA transfer earlier this year felt like it was moving at a snail's pace, even with what I thought was a solid custodian. For those of us still looking, did anyone here specifically choose a custodian based on their *advertised* average rollover completion time, and did that timeframe actually hold true in your experience?

Man, I feel this. My traditional 401k rollover last year felt like pulling teeth, even with a seemingly "easy" case. Took almost three months from start to finish, and I was on the phone way too much. Honestly, that's why I was so hesitant about converting a chunk to a gold IRA; thought it'd be even worse. Thankfully, the custodian I went with ended up being way more buttoned-up. Still, every time I hear "rollover," I get a little twitch.
