Just closed out another rollover for a buddy of mine, got me thinking about all the rookie mistakes I've seen people make getting into Gold IRAs. You’d think with all the info out there, folks would do more due diligence, but nope. The biggest one has to be rushing the custodian choice. Seriously, people just pick the first name that pops up and don't bother looking into fees, storage options, or even their customer service track record. I nearly got burned myself back in '08 after the market went sideways – thankful I had enough of my portfolio, about 60% at the time, already in physical. If I hadn’t, I’d still be pulling my hair out instead of enjoying my retirement here in NYC.
Another killer is not understanding diversification within the metals. I see too many people load up solely on gold eagles and think they're set. Don't get me wrong, I love my eagles, but diversifying with some silver, platinum, or even palladium can really cushion things. It's like only owning one stock – you're just asking for trouble. My own IRA, which is significant enough for me to be comfortable saying it’s well into the 7-figures, has a healthy mix, and that’s after decades of actively managing my portfolio. The last thing I want is to see all that hard work evaporate because I got lazy.
And for the love of all that is shiny, read the fine print on your fees! Storage, transaction, annual – they all add up. Some of these companies are slicker than a greased weasel when it comes to hiding fees. I remember one outfit tried to slip in a "portfolio management fee" that was completely unwarranted for an IRA holding just physical. It’s part of why I stress to everyone to spend some time educating themselves. There are some decent resources out there, like the Learning Center over at learn.goldirablueprint.com/?forum – used it myself for some refresher courses and to vet some of the questions my friends had before they made the leap. Have any of you guys found yourselves blindsided by unexpected fees?
