Rollover to Gold IRA: What should I use for a smaller amount (~$50k)?

    D
    Key Takeaways
    • Okay, so I've been seeing a lot of talk here about rolling over 401ks and IRAs into precious metals, particularly gold.
    • I just wrapped up an old 401k from a previous hospital that I need to roll over, and it's about $50k.
    • My current employer's 401k is performing well, so I'm not touching that, but this $50k is just sitting there.

Okay, so I've been seeing a lot of talk here about rolling over 401ks and IRAs into precious metals, particularly gold. I'm a doctor in Boston, mid-career, and personally, I've got a decent chunk of my portfolio (somewhere north of $750k total) in diversified assets, with a small percentage already in physical gold I bought directly. I just wrapped up an old 401k from a previous hospital that I need to roll over, and it's about $50k. My current employer's 401k is performing well, so I'm not touching that, but this $50k is just sitting there.

I'm contemplating putting this $50k into a Gold IRA. I like the idea of further diversifying and having that hedge against inflation, especially with all the economic uncertainty floating around. For those of you who have done smaller rollovers into a Gold IRA, what companies did you use? Are there any that are particularly good for these "smaller" amounts without hitting you with crazy fees? I’m talking about something that won't totally eat into the principal with setup costs, storage, etc.

I've done some preliminary research, but a lot of the companies seem to cater to much larger rollovers, and it's hard to tell if the fee structure makes sense for $50k. I’m thinking about either GSC or Augusta Precious Metals, but I'm definitely open to other suggestions. It's a significant chunk of change for me, even though it's a smaller piece of my overall portfolio, and I want to make sure I'm making a smart move here. Any insights or personal experiences would be super helpful.

I was also checking out some resources like the Learning Center at https://learn.goldirablueprint.com/?forum which has been pretty informative about the whole process, but hearing from real people who've actually done it is invaluable. Thanks in advance!

Hey, that's interesting about already having a small percentage in diversified assets. When you say "small percentage," are we talking about physical gold/silver, or something like mining stocks or ETFs?

Hey, I was in a super similar spot a few months back! Had about $60k I wanted to move over. Ended up going with APMEX for my Gold IRA mainly because their fees felt really transparent for smaller amounts, and their customer service was actually helpful. Good luck finding the right fit!

Honestly, for $50k, I'm not sure a full-blown Gold IRA makes the most sense given the fees. You already have a diversified portfolio, and if the goal is truly to add some physical gold exposure, you might be better off just buying some reputable gold coins or bars directly and storing them yourself or in a safety deposit box. The overhead for a modest amount in a Gold IRA can eat into your returns pretty quickly.

Hey, that's a great question, especially with a smaller amount. For around $50k, you might want to look into providers that don't have super high minimums or fees that would eat into your principal too much. Some companies are better suited for larger rollovers.

I found this Investopedia article on the best gold IRA companies pretty helpful for comparing fees and minimums. It could give you a good starting point to see who makes sense for a ~50k rollover. Good luck!

Hey, totally agree with you on diversifying with gold, especially with the current economic climate. For a $50k rollover, I went with American Hartford Gold. Their process was super smooth, and they even waived the first year's fees for me. Definitely worth checking out, especially since you're in a similar boat with a smaller chunk you want to move over.

You can move your 401(k) into physical gold — tax-free. Here's the step-by-step guide.
