Rollover to Gold IRA Timeline - My Experience
Just went through the 401k to Gold IRA rollover process myself and figured I'd share my timeline for anyone else considering it. I had a pretty chunky 401k sitting there from my last big development project, about $2.5MM, and after seeing this inflation spike and what’s happening globally, it just felt… exposed. Been heavy in real estate and some industrial metals for years, but the paper assets were starting to feel too risky. Diversification, right?
My advisor helped me get everything set up. The actual direct rollover from my old 401k custodian to the new Gold IRA custodian was surprisingly fast once all the paperwork was in. I think that part only took a couple of business days. The biggest holdup, honestly, was getting the distribution forms from my old 401k provider. They dragged their feet a bit, probably not thrilled to see a big chunk of change leaving. That probably added an extra week to the front end of the process, just chasing them down for the right forms and signatures.
Once the funds hit the Gold IRA account, selecting the actual metals was quick. I went with a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Gold Buffalos – always liked the look of those Buffalos. The custodian had pretty good inventory. Shipping and taking physical possession at the secure depository near Denver (I’m up in Aspen, so it's a convenient trip if I ever wanted to see it, which I probably won't, but it's nice to know) took another 5 business days from ordering. All told, from initial contact with my advisor to the metals being securely vaulted, I'd say it was about a 3-week total process. Not bad, considering the scale of the transfer.
Anyone else had similar experiences? Or wildly different timelines? Curious if my old 401k provider was an anomaly in terms of speed. How long did it take for you to get your distribution paperwork sorted?
