Been lurking here for a while, figured it's time to actually post. I rolled over an old 401k into a Gold IRA a few years back – nothing huge at the time, maybe $30k or so. Figured with my background in steel, commodities made sense, and the instability I was seeing in the market scared me enough to want some hard assets. Now, that initial chunk has grown nicely, and with another pension payout coming from my old plant here in Birmingham, I'm looking at adding another solid $100k-$150k to my Gold IRA.
My current custodian is fine, nothing particularly special, but also no major complaints. They felt like a good fit for that initial, smaller rollover. Now that I'm looking at a pretty significant increase in my holdings and potentially consolidating some other retirement accounts, I'm wondering if I should be shopping around. Are there companies that are generally better once you get past that initial "small investor" stage? Companies with better fee structures, or maybe more personalized service as your account size grows?
I'm primarily interested in physical gold and silver, nothing too exotic. My current setup is pretty straightforward – just storing it securely. But as someone who's seen the ups and downs of a commodity-driven industry firsthand for decades, security and stability are my main drivers here, not chasing the highest short-term gains. What I want to avoid are hidden fees or custodians who become a headache down the line.
So, for those of you with Gold IRAs that have grown beyond the initial small rollover, did you stick with your first company or did you switch? What factors made you decide? Any specific companies you’d recommend exploring for someone in my position, or equally important, any to absolutely steer clear of? Appreciate any insights you guys can offer.
