Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger on converting a big chunk of my old 401k into a Silver IRA. I've been sitting on this for a while, watching the market get... interesting, to say the least. After a good decade in tech, I cashed out some options and realized my retirement portfolio was way too heavily weighted in equities and frankly, pretty volatile. So, after a lot of research and talking to a few different custodians, I decided on a direct rollover into silver, aiming for about 15-20% of my total retirement assets, which for me is roughly $200k. I'm based here in SF, so seeing some of the local real estate corrections and general economic jitters just cemented my decision to diversify into something tangible.
I started the process about three weeks ago. First step was contacting my old 401k administrator – that was probably the most annoying part, all the paperwork and waiting on hold. They needed a notarized signature for the distribution request, which took a day. Once that was submitted, it was a waiting game for them to release the funds. My new Silver IRA custodian was pretty on top of things, had all the account setup paperwork ready to go, and was super helpful explaining the process. They estimated 5-10 business days for the funds to actually hit their account after the old 401k released them.
We're now at day 12 since the original request and the funds just cleared this morning. Next up is actually selecting the silver products and getting them shipped to the depository. My custodian quoted another 3-5 business days for that, plus transit time. All in all, it looks like it's going to be a solid 3-4 week process end-to-end. Has anyone else experienced similar timelines, or was yours faster/slower? Would love to hear some other folks' experiences, especially if you ran into any unexpected delays.
I've been using tools like the Gold vs Stocks Comparison to try and get a better historical perspective, and it's definitely reinforced my belief that putting some eggs into precious metals is a smart long-term play right now. Just hoping the actual physical transfer doesn't add any more unexpected wrinkles!
