Okay, so I’m in the middle of a 401k rollover to a Gold IRA, and I’m just trying to get a feel for how long this usually takes for other folks. I decided to make the move a few weeks back after seeing what the market's been doing. I've got a decent chunk of change sitting there, just under $700k, and with me starting to think about my succession plan for the logistics company here in Memphis, I want to make sure my retirement is as solid as Fort Knox.
I initiated the process a couple of weeks ago with my current 401k administrator, and now I'm just waiting for the funds to clear and then get transferred to the new custodian for the gold purchase. The Gold IRA provider I'm working with has been pretty responsive, but I’m just feeling a little antsy with such a significant chunk of change in limbo, even for a short time. I heard some stories about these things taking forever, and others saying it's super quick. What was your experience?
Specifically, once you got your old 401k administrator to cut the check (or do the wire transfer), how long did it take for the funds to actually hit your new Gold IRA custodian's account? And then from there, how long until your precious metals were actually purchased and secured? I'm trying to manage my expectations here. The guys I’m working with said typically 2-4 weeks, but I’m wondering if that’s best-case or average. It’s a direct rollover, so no tax implications to worry about, thankfully.
Also, if anyone's looking into this, I found this Gold IRA Quiz at quiz.goldirablueprint.com/?forum really helpful for understanding the whole process before I even started. It gave me a good foundation. But yeah, back to the timeline – lay it on me, what's been your real-world experience with these rollovers?
