Rollover silver for IRA - Eagles vs. generics? Looking for some advice here.
- •I like the stability, the historical track record, and honestly, the peace of mind.
- •But now I'm looking at allocating a smaller portion, maybe $50k-$75k, into silver within the IRA.
- •I’m a Philadelphia lawyer, 50s, so I’m really just looking to hold onto what I’ve built.
I just finished my 401k to Gold IRA rollover – about $650k went in, mostly into gold as that’s always been my primary focus for wealth preservation, especially with the way things are going globally. I like the stability, the historical track record, and honestly, the peace of mind. But now I'm looking at allocating a smaller portion, maybe $50k-$75k, into silver within the IRA. My question for those with experience here is about the silver choices for an IRA. Specifically, American Silver Eagles vs. generic silver rounds/bars. I know the Eagles come with a premium, sometimes a pretty hefty one, which usually steers me away. My initial thought is to go with whatever gets me the most actual silver weight for my dollar, meaning generics. I'm not really looking to collect, just to have a physical silver hedge. But I’ve heard arguments that the Eagles can be more liquid, easier to sell back down the line, and might even hold their premium better in a serious economic downturn. Is that premium worth it for an IRA where I'm not planning on touching it for another 10-15 years?
Has anyone here gone the generic route for their IRA silver and had any issues with storage providers or eventual liquidation? Or conversely, for those who bit the bullet on the Eagle premium, do you feel it was a worthwhile investment? I've been doing a lot of my own research, poking through articles on the Learning Center, which has been incredibly helpful for understanding the general IRA rules and storage options, but I'm looking for some real-world experiences on this specific choice.
I’m trying to make an informed decision here given the size of the allocation. Any insights or war stories from your own investment journeys would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
