Just went through the full 401k to Gold IRA rollover process, and I wanted to share my experience with the timeline for anyone else considering it. I’ve been kicking around the idea of diversifying some of my retirement accounts into physical metals for a while now, especially with all the economic uncertainty we've been seeing. After leaving my bank manager gig a few years back and seeing some of the behind-the-scenes shenanigans, I'm a firm believer in having some tangible assets outside the traditional paper system.
My old 401k had about $380k in it from my banking days, and I decided to move roughly $150k over into a Gold IRA. I started the research phase in late January, got all my paperwork sorted in mid-February, and finally saw the metals purchased and confirmed in my account by mid-April. That’s almost two full months! I was expecting maybe 4-6 weeks, especially since my old 401k provider seemed pretty efficient with other requests. The biggest holdup was definitely the transfer of funds between the custodians. It felt like a black hole for a couple of weeks where my money just… existed somewhere in limbo. I was calling my new Gold IRA company and my old 401k provider practically daily, just to make sure things were moving along.
The folks at the Gold IRA company were great about keeping me updated, even if the news was sometimes "still waiting." They explained that direct rollovers often take a bit longer due to compliance checks and interbank transfers, which made sense eventually. Now that it's all done and I can see my gold in the vault statements, the peace of mind is genuinely worth the wait. Living out here in Portland, I've heard a lot of chatter about inflation and market dips, and having that tangible hedge feels like a smart move for my future.
Anyone else go through a similar timeline? Did yours take even longer, or was it surprisingly quick? Any specific hurdles you ran into with your old provider?
