Thought I'd share my recent experience with a 401k to Gold IRA rollover, as I know these timelines can be a black box for some. My situation was a bit complex, coming from a highly concentrated pre-tax 401k from my old firm – think a few million tied up in funds I didn't love, plus a smaller Roth 401k that I wanted to consolidate. I'm pretty heavy into physical metals already (been stacking since '08, got a decent vault down here in Palm Beach), but wanted to bring some of my qualified funds into the fold as well.
The whole process took about 6 weeks from start to finish. That's from the initial call to the IRA custodian (I went with a well-established company; not naming names, but they specialize in precious metals IRAs and have good reviews) to the physical delivery of the metals to the depository. The longest pole in the tent, as expected, was getting my old 401k administrator to actually cut the check. That alone took nearly three weeks, and required a few follow-up calls that felt a bit like pulling teeth. Once the funds hit the IRA custodian, though, things moved much faster. I had my allocation picked out – mostly Eagles and Maples, with a small portion in platinum for diversification – and settlement was quick, probably 3-4 business days.
What prompted the move? Honestly, seeing the writing on the wall with the sheer amount of debt and global instability. I retired last year after a good run as a CEO, and while my portfolio is substantial (north of $5M), I felt like my "safe" retirement accounts were anything but. This rollover, for me, was less about chasing short-term gains and more about preserving purchasing power and having a tangible asset outside the traditional financial system. I mean, after decades in the corporate world, you learn to trust verifiable assets over promises on a balance sheet.
Anyone else have recent rollover experiences with different timelines? Or even horror stories from their old 401k administrators delaying things? Always curious to hear how others navigate these waters.
