I’m about two years down the line since rolling over a significant chunk of my old 401(k) into a Gold IRA. I’ve been in the casino industry out here in Vegas for decades, so I’m pretty used to thinking about risk versus reward, but this is a different animal. When I made the move, I put about $150k into physical gold and silver, mostly gold. It felt right at the time, given the instability I was seeing, and honestly, it still feels like a solid hedge against inflation and market craziness. My other retirement accounts are mostly in diversified growth funds, so this was definitely a strategic move to add some real physical asset exposure to my portfolio.
Now, I’m looking at the performance and while it’s done okay, I’m wondering if I should be thinking about rebalancing. The overall value has increased, but I’m curious if I’ve put too many eggs in one basket, even if that basket is gold. I saw a lot of chatter recently about silver's potential, and I did pick up some silver bullion alongside the gold, but it's a smaller percentage. I'm not looking to day trade here, obviously, but for someone like me who's still a good 10-15 years out from fully retiring, is it wise to hold onto this much physical gold long-term without periodically adjusting the mix?
Has anyone here used the Gold IRA Calculator to specifically model different allocation scenarios? I’m thinking of running some numbers to see the potential returns if I shifted some of the gold into silver, or even if I should consider taking a portion out (if that’s even feasible, tax-wise, without messing up the IRA status) and reallocating it to something else entirely. Finding that sweet spot between protecting against volatility and still seeing decent growth is a constant balancing act. Any thoughts on how you approach rebalancing your Gold IRA, especially after a couple of years?
Appreciate anyone's insights. This forum has been a wealth of knowledge.
