Okay, so I just completed the rollover of about $1.8 million from my old tech company 401k into a Gold IRA. The process itself was fairly smooth, took a little over three weeks from start to finish. I'm sitting here in my Dublin, OH office, looking at the account statement, and honestly, I'm already feeling... antsy. Part of it is the sheer amount of capital that's now in one asset class, even if it is a historically stable one like gold. The other part is just that I'm used to seeing more aggressive growth, even with the volatility.
For context, I started and sold a pretty successful SaaS company a few years back, so I'm not exactly new to managing money, but this is my first significant foray into physical precious metals. The whole idea was to de-risk a substantial portion of my retirement savings given the current economic climate and what I see as increasing instability in traditional markets. My financial advisor was on board with the move, emphasizing the long-term protection and diversification benefits.
But now I'm wondering if I went too hard. Should I have kept a larger percentage in, say, a broader market index fund instead? I know the common advice is to rebalance, but with gold, it feels different. It's not like I'm checking daily stock prices. For those of you who've gone heavy into Gold IRAs, how do you manage the "itch" to reallocate? Do you set specific timeframes or market triggers for reviewing your gold position?
I guess I'm looking for some validation, or maybe some tough love, on whether this level of commitment to gold makes sense for someone in their late 40s who still has a good 15-20 years until proper retirement. Any similar experiences or advice on how you manage your Gold IRA alongside other investments would be really helpful.
