Just wrapped up the rollover of a big chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Had about $750k in an old company 401k from before I started my logistics business here in Memphis. With the succession planning starting to ramp up as I get things ready to hand over to my daughter, I really wanted to shore up my retirement assets against all this inflation talk and general market weirdness. Gold just felt like the right move for some of it, especially with everything going on globally.
Honestly, the process was way smoother than I anticipated. I'd heard some horror stories about paperwork nightmares and slow transfers, but my custodian (Augusta Precious Metals, if anyone's curious) was on top of it. From initiating the direct rollover to getting the physical gold deposited into their Delaware depository, it was about three weeks end-to-end. They did a good job explaining which coins/bars were eligible and making sure everything was IRS compliant. I allocated about $300k of that old 401k into various gold bullion products. The rest I’m keeping in more traditional investments for now, just to stay diversified.
Feeling a lot more secure knowing a significant portion of my retirement savings isn't just sitting in paper assets. It's a tangible hedge, and that peace of mind is worth a lot right now. I know some folks are skeptical about precious metals in a retirement account, but for someone like me who’s been through a few economic cycles running my own business, it just feels like prudent risk management. Anyone else recently made a similar move? What was your experience like with your custodian?
