Honestly still buzzing a bit. Just finished up the rollover from my old tech company 401k into a Gold IRA, and I gotta say, it was way less of a headache than I pictured. For years, sitting on all that paper, watching the markets do their thing felt… squishy. Especially after cashing out my stake in '21, a good chunk of that was just begging for something tangible. I'm based here in Dublin, Ohio, and with everything going on globally, I really wanted to shore up a portion of my retirement for true long-term stability.
My old 401k with Vanguard had about $1.8 million in it from my startup days, and I decided to move about $750k of that into physical gold. The process itself took roughly three weeks from the first call to getting the transfer confirmed. The biggest 'hassle' was just coordinating between the custodian I chose and Vanguard; lots of forms, naturally. But my contact at the gold IRA company was super proactive and basically held my hand through the entire thing, pushing Vanguard when things seemed to stall. It honestly felt like a small win just getting Vanguard to move with any kind of speed.
The "twist" was picking the actual gold. I initially went in thinking I'd just get whatever standard bars were available. But after talking it through, I opted for a mix, including a decent chunk of Gold Eagles. The idea of having something recognizable and fractional felt right, rather than just large industrial bars. Plus, their premium wasn't as insane as I'd anticipated for the peace of mind. It's now sitting securely, and frankly, I sleep a lot better knowing that portion of my wealth isn't just digits on a screen anymore.
Anyone else here made a similar move recently? What were your biggest surprises, good or bad? And for those who went with different kinds of precious metals, what influenced your choices beyond just standard bullion?
