Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger on rolling a portion of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and honestly, the process was smoother than I anticipated. I've been sitting on about $350k in my old employer's 401k for a while now, just watching it do… whatever the market was doing. With all the talk recently about inflation and the general state of things, I decided it was time to diversify a bit more aggressively. Being in the bourbon industry, I appreciate a good, steady, legacy business, and gold has definitely got that going for it.
I ended up going with American Bullion for the rollover. Their team was pretty solid – explained everything clearly, no high-pressure sales tactics, which I really appreciated. The whole process, from the initial call to getting the actual metals securely stored, took about three weeks. I moved roughly $150k over, focusing on a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Gold Buffalos. Felt good to get some tangible assets in my portfolio, especially after seeing the paper gains and losses for so long.
Now, while I’m feeling pretty good about the move, I do have a few lingering questions for anyone else who’s done something similar. For those of you who rolled over a significant amount, did you go with a diversified precious metals mix or stick primarily with gold? Also, I'm curious about storage. I opted for segregated storage, which felt right for my peace of mind, but some colleagues have mentioned co-mingled storage to save a few bucks. What are your thoughts on that? My priority is protecting what I’ve built, not necessarily pinching pennies on storage fees, but I'm open to perspectives.
Overall, pretty positive experience. It's a nice feeling knowing a chunk of my retirement is in something that's stood the test of time, rather than just digital numbers on a screen. Anyone in particular in the Lexington area doing something similar? Would love to connect.
