Rolled over part of my 401k to Gold IRA - my experience so far

Just wanted to share my experience for anyone else on the fence or looking into this. I work for the state here in Albuquerque, have a good pension, but with everything going on these days, I really wanted to diversify beyond just stocks and bonds. My 401k was doing okay, but it felt…exposed, you know? Decided to move about 75k of it into a Gold IRA earlier this year.
The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I worked with a company recommended by a buddy (won't name them here, don't want to sound shilly). They handled pretty much everything with my old 401k administrator. It wasn't instant – took maybe 3-4 weeks from start to finish, mostly waiting for paperwork and transfers. I was a bit nervous watching that money move, I won't lie. Like, is this really happening? But the company guided me through each step, and once the metals were actually in the depository, I felt a huge weight lift off. It’s a good feeling knowing a chunk of my retirement isn't tied directly to the whims of the stock market.
I’m looking at this as a long-term play, especially as a supplement to my pension. The goal isn't quick gains, but preserving purchasing power and having a hedge against inflation. For anyone else who is also a government employee, or just looking to beef up their retirement security, it’s worth considering. Has anyone else done this recently? What was your experience like? Any surprises?
One thing I'm already thinking about for down the line are RMDs. I mean, it's a ways off, but my wife and I were looking at this RMD Calculator online and it’s pretty useful for understanding what that might look like with physical assets. Definitely worth checking out if you're planning for the future.
