Okay, so I’ve been thinking about doing this for a while and finally pulled the trigger. Like many of you, I've got a decent chunk of my retirement in a traditional 401k through my job (insurance agent here in Omaha). Nothing crazy, probably sitting around $200k right now, but it's all in the usual mix of mutual funds and ETFs. Been feeling a little exposed to market volatility, especially with all the talk about inflation and interest rates lately. My dad always preached diversification but also really valued tangible assets, which got me thinking about precious metals beyond just the hypothetical.
After a good amount of research, I decided to roll over about $25k of that 401k into a Gold IRA. Worked with one of the bigger-name custodians for precious metals, and honestly, the process was smoother than I expected. The funds went directly from my existing 401k to the new Gold IRA custodian without me ever touching them, which was a huge relief for tax purposes. I opted for primarily gold rounds – seemed like a good balance between liquidity, divisibility, and getting more bang for my buck compared to some of the more premium-priced coins. My rationale was to have a tangible hedge against potential economic downturns and just sleep a bit better at night knowing a portion of my wealth isn't purely digital or tied to corporate performance.
Now that it's done, I'm feeling a mix of relief and a tiny bit of "did I do this right?" Part of me wonders if I should have gone for more bars or a different mix of rounds vs. coins. It's not a huge percentage of my overall portfolio, maybe 10-12%, so it feels like a manageable allocation for a first step. For those of you who’ve done a similar rollover into gold rounds – what was your experience? Any regrets or things you wish you’d known beforehand? Or conversely, any particular benefits you’ve seen over time?
