Finally pulled the trigger and rolled over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Been thinking about it for a while, especially with all the talk about inflation and the market feeling a bit... frothy, to say the least. Ended up moving about $150k out of a total of around $220k I had squirreled away from my previous job. The gold's sitting in a vault over in Delaware somewhere, which honestly makes me feel a lot better than it being just numbers on a screen.
The whole process was actually smoother than I expected, though it took a little more paperwork than I'm used to. Had a bit of a back-and-forth with the 401k administrator, but the Gold IRA company I went with (won't name them here, but DM me if you want to know) was pretty helpful in guiding me through it. I'm based here in Louisville – got a little horse farm outside the city limits – and frankly, tangible assets just make more sense to me. Seen too many folks lose everything on paper investments when the economy hiccups. Gold feels like something I can actually understand and hold onto, even if it's not physically in my barn.
My main goal wasn't necessarily to get rich quick, but more about diversification and protecting what I’ve built. My family's been in agriculture for generations, and we’ve always valued things that are real and lasting. This felt like a natural extension of that philosophy. I still have some of my portfolio in stocks, mainly for growth, but having this bedrock of gold gives me a lot of peace of mind these days. It’s a good hedge, or at least that’s what I’m hoping for.
Just curious if anyone else here has done a similar rollover? How are you feeling about your decision now? Any unexpected pros or cons come up for you since making the switch? Always good to hear other peoples' experiences when you're dealing with your hard-earned money.
