Rolled over my 401k to a Gold IRA – My experience (Louisville, KY based)

Thought I'd share my recent experience with rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I've been managing my retirement funds pretty conservatively, mostly in index funds and some real estate, but with all the craziness in the market lately, I started seriously looking at precious metals. I'm a horse farm owner here outside Louisville, and frankly, I just prefer assets I can see and hold, or at least understand their intrinsic value. My portfolio is in the low six figures, probably around $180k, and I decided to move about $50k of that over to gold.
The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I was dreading mountains of paperwork and a bunch of phone calls, but once I picked a custodian, they handled most of the heavy lifting. I used an online service to check my eligibility first (this Eligibility Checker tool was pretty handy for that, just to make sure I wasn't wasting anyone's time). Turns out, my old 401k was eligible for a direct rollover. Whew.
The actual transfer took about 3 weeks from start to finish. There was a bit of back and forth between my old 401k administrator and the new Gold IRA custodian, mainly verifying identity and account details. The biggest hold-up was honestly just me getting around to signing documents. Once everything was approved, the funds were transferred electronically, and then the gold was purchased and sent to a depository in Delaware. I opted for a mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maple Leafs – just felt right.
Honestly, I feel a lot better having that portion of my wealth in something truly tangible. Call me old-fashioned, but it just provides a level of security that the stock market doesn't these days. I'm not saying it's for everyone, or that I moved my entire portfolio, but for me, as a hedge against inflation and market volatility, it's a practical choice. Has anyone else done a similar rollover recently? Any insights or things you wish you'd known beforehand?
