Rolled over my 401k to a Gold IRA – my experience from the Pacific

Just wrapped up the process of rolling over a significant chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and thought I'd share my experience for anyone else out there considering it. Spent a good 25 years in the Navy, mostly out in the Pacific, and saw firsthand how quickly things can shift globally. That perspective definitely played a role in wanting to diversify beyond just paper assets.
My old 401k had about $750k in it. The process itself wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. I worked with a company that specialized in Gold IRAs, and they basically held my hand through the whole thing. The trickiest part was honestly just getting the old 401k administrator to release the funds and send them directly to the new custodian. Took a few follow-up calls, which was a bit irritating, but nothing I couldn't handle. From start to finish, I'd say it was about a 3-week process until the gold rounds were officially in my new account.
Initially, I was a little nervous about the storage aspect, especially living out here in Honolulu. My gold isn't actually physically here with me, of course; it's in a secure, insured vault back on the mainland. It gives me a good peace of mind knowing that a portion of my retirement isn't tied to the volatility of the stock market. With all the geopolitical rumblings over the past few years, especially in our neck of the woods, having a tangible asset feels like a smart move.
For those of you who've done something similar, what were your biggest takeaways or challenges? And for anyone on the fence, what are your main questions or concerns? I'm curious to hear other people's perspectives, especially if you're holding a similar amount or have a unique global outlook.
