Just wanted to share my experience making the leap and rolling over a chunk of my 401k into a Gold IRA. I've been a military contractor for years, based out of Jacksonville, and frankly, the current economic climate has me a little more on edge than usual. I've always been a security-minded investor – not looking for crazy gains, just solid preservation of capital.
I had about $180k sitting in an old 401k that was just... there. It felt exposed, especially with all the talk of inflation and geopolitical instability. After a lot of research (and honestly, a few sleepless nights), I decided to move about $120k of it into a Gold IRA, specifically focusing on gold coins. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward once I found a reputable custodian. There was a bit of paperwork, as expected, but no major headaches. It probably took about three weeks from start to finish to see it all officially transferred and confirm the physical gold was secured.
Honestly, the peace of mind is worth it. Knowing I have a tangible asset, something that's historically held its value during uncertain times, just feels right for my risk tolerance. Especially with everything going on overseas. I still have a decent chunk in traditional investments, but this gold allocation feels like a really strong hedge. For anyone else in a similar boat, thinking about diversifying out of paper assets – what are your thoughts?
Have any of you done a similar rollover recently? Any other military contractors out there feeling the same way about the current market? Always curious to hear other perspectives on this, especially when it comes to long-term security.
