    🔄 Rollover

Rolled over an old 401k to Gold, what were your minimums?

    Key Takeaways
    • I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter lately on minimum investment requirements for Gold IRAs, and it got me thinking about my own journey.
    • I actually rolled over a significant chunk of an old 401k into a Gold IRA back in 2010.
    • After the whole 2008 mess, I just didn't trust the paper assets like I used to.
    The 3-step rollover process explained

I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter lately on minimum investment requirements for Gold IRAs, and it got me thinking about my own journey. I actually rolled over a significant chunk of an old 401k into a Gold IRA back in 2010. After the whole 2008 mess, I just didn't trust the paper assets like I used to. Most of my teaching pension is in traditional stuff, but I really wanted some tangible protection, especially for the money I saved up myself.

At the time, I think I put in around $100k, maybe a little more, into physical gold through a company based out of Delaware. I remember calling around to a few places, and the minimums varied quite a bit. Some places felt like they were really pushing me to invest more than I was comfortable with, but I stood my ground. My total portfolio, including the gold, is probably in the $200-250k range now, mostly from that initial rollover and some growth. It’s been a good feeling just knowing I have that safety net.

My biggest concern then was making sure I wasn't getting ripped off with fees, and that the gold was actually being stored securely. I'm in Phoenix, so I didn't want it sitting in a vault in some sketchy part of the country. Luckily, everything has worked out great so far. I’m curious, for those of you who have done a gold IRA rollover, what kind of minimum investment were you looking at? Did you find the requirements were pretty standard, or did they vary wildly like I experienced?

Also, any teachers out there who’ve done something similar with their retirement? I’m always interested in hearing how others in our profession are navigating these financial waters, especially post-retirement.

Genuinely curious — has anyone here actually tried to liquidate from their gold IRA? How smooth was that process?

That's awesome you got into a Gold IRA way back then! For anyone else looking to do a rollover, it's super important to understand how to avoid any tax penalties. The IRS has pretty specific rules about direct vs. indirect rollovers.

I found this IRS page on rollovers especially helpful for clarifying the differences and making sure you don't accidentally incur a penalty. Definitely worth a quick read before you make any moves!

Hey, that's interesting you did that back in 2010! I was curious, when you rolled over your old 401k, did you primarily stick to gold, or did you diversify with other precious metals like silver or platinum as well?

Oh man, I totally get this! I did something similar around 2012 with an old 401k from a job I'd left a few years prior. The minimum for me was $25k, if I remember correctly. I'd been watching the market and just felt like I needed something more tangible for that part of my retirement. Glad to hear someone else was thinking along the same lines after '08.

It's interesting how many people jump to minimums. My thought process was less about hitting a specific dollar amount and more about what percentage of my overall retirement I wanted in physical assets. Like, it's not a race to the bottom with the minimum, but more about what makes sense for your personal risk tolerance and diversification strategy.

My advisor told me 10-15% in gold is the sweet spot but I went heavier. We'll see how it plays out.

Interesting take. I've heard the opposite from a few people though — would love to see some actual numbers on this.

This mirrors what I've been seeing too. The macro environment right now is making a strong case for physical metals.

I was pretty skeptical about another gold IRA forum but the tools here on GIRAB actually surprised me — the calculator alone saved me hours of spreadsheet work.
