I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter lately on minimum investment requirements for Gold IRAs, and it got me thinking about my own journey. I actually rolled over a significant chunk of an old 401k into a Gold IRA back in 2010. After the whole 2008 mess, I just didn't trust the paper assets like I used to. Most of my teaching pension is in traditional stuff, but I really wanted some tangible protection, especially for the money I saved up myself.
At the time, I think I put in around $100k, maybe a little more, into physical gold through a company based out of Delaware. I remember calling around to a few places, and the minimums varied quite a bit. Some places felt like they were really pushing me to invest more than I was comfortable with, but I stood my ground. My total portfolio, including the gold, is probably in the $200-250k range now, mostly from that initial rollover and some growth. It’s been a good feeling just knowing I have that safety net.
My biggest concern then was making sure I wasn't getting ripped off with fees, and that the gold was actually being stored securely. I'm in Phoenix, so I didn't want it sitting in a vault in some sketchy part of the country. Luckily, everything has worked out great so far. I’m curious, for those of you who have done a gold IRA rollover, what kind of minimum investment were you looking at? Did you find the requirements were pretty standard, or did they vary wildly like I experienced?
Also, any teachers out there who’ve done something similar with their retirement? I’m always interested in hearing how others in our profession are navigating these financial waters, especially post-retirement.
