Rolled over a substantial chunk of my 401k into physical gold - best decision of my post-Chevron life.

Thought I'd share my experience with rolling over a decent portion of my old 401k into gold. After spending 35 years in the energy sector down here in Houston, seeing the ups and downs of the market, I got pretty conservative with my retirement savings. My 401k had grown to a pretty healthy sum, definitely north of a million bucks for sure, but all those paper assets made me a bit uneasy. Especially after seeing the volatility in the mid-2000s and then again more recently.
I started really looking into a Gold IRA a few years back, probably around 2020 or so. The idea of having something tangible, something that isn't just digits on a screen, really appealed to me. I'd been holding some physical gold myself for a while, just smaller amounts, but nothing like what I was thinking for my retirement. Did a ton of research, probably drove my wife a little crazy with all the reading and phone calls. Ended up going with a company that helped me do a direct rollover from my old 401k into a self-directed IRA that could hold physical gold and silver. It wasn't immediate, took a few weeks to get everything sorted with the custodians and transfer agents, but it was surprisingly straightforward once I had all my ducks in a row.
I ended up allocating about 25% of my total retirement assets to physical gold – mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Gold Maple Leafs. The peace of mind alone has been worth it. Knowing that a significant portion of my nest egg isn't subject to the whims of the stock market or political maneuvering is huge. Even with gold’s own fluctuations, it feels like a bedrock investment. My financial advisor back then was a bit skeptical, tried to talk me into more "diversified" paper assets, but I just couldn't shake the feeling that hard assets were the way to go for my financial future. He eventually came around, or at least he stopped trying to argue with me.
Anyone else here made a similar move with their 401k or other retirement accounts? What was your experience like? And for those who are thinking about it, what are your biggest reservations?
