Just wrapped up my first rollover from an old 401k into a Gold IRA, and man, it was a learning experience! I'm a young professional here in Charleston, just getting serious about retirement planning, and I had this old 401k from my first gig with about $15k in it. It wasn't doing much sitting there, and after reading up on inflation and market volatility, I decided a Gold IRA made a lot of sense for some diversification.
The process itself was surprisingly straightforward once I got all the paperwork in order. The Gold IRA company I went with had pretty clear instructions, and the old 401k administrator actually wasn't as difficult as I thought they'd be. The biggest hiccup was probably just the waiting game – felt like forever for the funds to actually transfer and for the physical gold to be purchased and stored. I ended up putting about 70% of that $15k into American Gold Eagles and the rest into some Canadian Gold Maple Leafs. Felt good to finally have something tangible backing a portion of my retirement savings, especially with all the economic talk going on.
Now that it's done, I'm already looking at my current 401k and wondering if I should diversify more. I'm building my portfolio up slowly, aiming for around $50k within the next couple of years. Has anyone here used the Gold IRA Calculator to get a sense of potential returns or how much of your portfolio you should allocate to precious metals? I'm curious if my initial $15k rollover is a good starting point or if I should be thinking bigger for my next move.
Also, for those who've done this before, any tips on monitoring your Gold IRA? I know it's not like checking stock prices daily, but what's your routine for keeping an eye on things? Any unexpected fees or gotchas I should be aware of down the line? Really appreciate any insights from the community here!
