Just wrapped up the process of rolling over a good chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and wanted to share my experience. Always been a fan of diversification, especially once I hit admiral rank and saw the bigger picture of global finance. After 30 years in the Navy and a fairly conservative investment strategy, I started looking into tangible assets a few years back. The whole paper asset thing just felt... increasingly vulnerable.
Decided to move about $400k of a larger 401k I had sitting from my last command. I worked with a firm specializing in precious metals IRAs, and honestly, the process was smoother than I anticipated. I was a bit apprehensive about the paperwork and the transfer, given I'm located down here in Virginia Beach and dealing with a custodian on the other side of the country. But they handled most of the heavy lifting. The biggest thing was just being proactive with my old 401k administrator – they can sometimes drag their feet a bit with transfers, especially when it’s not to another conventional fund. Took about a month and a half from my initial inquiry to having the gold physically secured in the vault. They sent me the documentation confirming possession and storage, which put my mind at ease.
My reasoning was pretty straightforward: hedging against inflation and geopolitical instability. After seeing how much money has been printed over the last few years, and the political climate globally, I just feel safer having some of my wealth outside of traditional markets. It’s a foundational piece of my long-term strategy, not a quick flip. I still have a significant portion in stocks and bonds, but this Gold IRA offers a different kind of reassurance. Anyone else go through this recently? Have any of you Virginia folks found local resources or advisors you’d recommend for this kind of thing?
