Rolled over a chunk of my old 401k to a Gold IRA – my experience & some thoughts
- •I finally got around to moving a significant portion of an old 401k into a Gold IRA, roughly $250k.
- •Most of the hold-up was on the old 401k provider's side, as expected.
- •The Gold IRA company I chose was pretty responsive, but I made sure to do my due diligence on them beforehand.
I finally got around to moving a significant portion of an old 401k into a Gold IRA, roughly $250k. I’m a lawyer here in Philly, and while I’m not exactly strapped for cash, my focus has always been more on wealth preservation than chasing aggressive growth. Given the way things have been going lately with inflation creeping up and the general market volatility, it just felt like the right time to diversify out of paper assets.
The process itself was surprisingly straightforward, though it did take a bit longer than I initially anticipated – probably about 4-5 weeks from start to finish. Most of the hold-up was on the old 401k provider's side, as expected. The Gold IRA company I chose was pretty responsive, but I made sure to do my due diligence on them beforehand. I spent a fair bit of time poring over their reviews and checking their affiliations. I’m not one to jump into something this significant without feeling absolutely confident.
My primary goal here wasn't to hit a home run, but rather to establish a bulwark against potential economic downturns. It brings me a surprising amount of peace of mind knowing that a good chunk of my retirement savings is now in physical assets, held securely. It’s a different kind of feeling than just seeing numbers on a screen. For anyone else considering this, I'd highly recommend spending some serious time on research. I found the educational resources at the Learning Center particularly helpful for understanding the nuances before I even started reaching out to providers.
Has anyone else here done a similar rollover recently? What was your experience like? Any surprises, good or bad, that you encountered? I’m always curious to hear other people’s perspectives on this, especially for those of us who are aiming for long-term stability rather than short-term gains.
