Rolled over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA - best decision in years.

Thought I'd share my experience with re-allocating a good portion of my retirement savings. After all those years on Wall Street, watching market after market fluctuate and all the fancy quantitative models blow up in people's faces, I decided enough was enough with being heavily exposed to the equities market. I'm sitting on a portfolio north of a couple million, but frankly, seeing the valuations today feels a lot like 1999 all over again, just with different tech darlings leading the charge.
About two years ago, I started seriously looking into a Gold IRA. I had a significant chunk, about $750k, still sitting in an old 401k from my last firm. It wasn't performing terribly, but it wasn't exactly setting the world on fire either, and the volatility just kept me up at night here in my NYC apartment. The process of rolling it over was surprisingly straightforward. Found a reputable custodian, opened the self-directed IRA, and then got to choosing the metals. Decided to go with a mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maples. Nothing fancy, just good old-fashioned physical gold held securely.
The peace of mind alone has been worth it. Knowing a good 30-40% of my portfolio isn't directly tied to the whims of the stock market, interest rate hikes, or some geopolitical crisis is incredibly reassuring. My biggest concern before was liquidity, but I've got enough other assets that I'm not worried about needing to sell my gold in a hurry. For anyone on the fence, especially if you're like me with a decent chunk of change sitting in a traditional retirement account and nearing or in retirement, it’s absolutely worth exploring. It feels good to have that diversification.
What are others' experiences with Gold IRAs? Any regrets or things you wish you'd done differently? I'm curious to hear.
