Rolled over a chunk of my 401K to gold, feeling pretty good about it now

Just wanted to share my experience with getting some of my 401K into physical gold. For years, I’ve been hearing about inflation, market volatility, all that good stuff, and honestly, the thought of all my eggs being in one basket (stocks, bonds, you know the drill) kept me up at night sometimes. Especially being in agriculture here in Fresno, you just get used to expecting the unexpected, and I like having tangible assets I can actually see and hold onto.
I finally decided to pull the trigger a few months back. I had about a $75k chunk in my old 401K that I wasn’t actively contributing to anymore, and after doing some research, a Gold IRA seemed like the most straightforward way to diversify without incurring a bunch of penalties. The process itself wasn't too bad – a bit of paperwork, some back and forth with the custodian, but nothing that felt overwhelming. It took about 3-4 weeks from start to finish to get the funds rolled over and the actual gold purchased and sent to the depository. Ended up getting mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples.
I know some folks on here are probably all about tech stocks and high-growth, but for me, having maybe $60-$70k of that capital now sitting in physical gold just feels right. It’s a hedge, plain and simple. With everything going on globally, and even just locally with water issues impacting our yields, I just feel more secure knowing I’ve got that foundational asset. It’s not about getting rich overnight, it’s about preserving wealth and having something stable when everything else is going haywire.
Anyone else here made a similar move with their retirement funds? What prompted you to diversify into precious metals, and how are you feeling about it now? Curious to hear other perspectives, especially from those who've been holding for a while.
