Finally pulled the trigger and rolled over about $250k of my old business's 401k into a Gold IRA. Had been thinking about it for a while, especially with all the talk about inflation and the market feeling a bit squirrely lately. My logistics company here in Memphis is doing well, but I'm starting to think about succession planning in the next 5-7 years, and wanted some of my retirement nest egg a bit more insulated from the usual market swings. Diversification, right?
The process itself was... fine. Not as seamless as just hitting a button, but not a nightmare either. Took about three weeks from first contact to actually seeing the metal purchased and allocated. My administrator was pretty good about walking me through the paperwork, and I chose to go with actually buying physical gold American Gold Eagles. Felt more concrete than just a paper certificate, you know? The fees were a bit of a sting, but I guess that's the cost of doing business when you're moving this kind of capital into a specialized asset.
I'm feeling pretty good about the decision long-term. My portfolio was previously pretty heavily weighted in tech and some blue-chip stocks, which have done great for me, but I just wanted that bedrock of a tangible asset. It’s hard to put a price on that peace of mind, especially when you’ve been building wealth for decades and are starting to think about preserving it.
Anyone else here gone through a similar 401k to Gold IRA rollover recently? What were your biggest pain points or pleasant surprises? And for those who've held gold in their IRA for a while, what's been your overall experience?
