Rolled over a chunk of my 401k to a Gold IRA - thoughts/experience so far
- •Finally pulled the trigger and rolled over a decent portion of my old 401k into a Gold IRA a few months back.
- •Had about $750k sitting in an old employer's plan that wasn't doing much for me, so I took about a third of that and moved it into physical.
- •The process itself was surprisingly smooth, though getting the old custodian to release the funds felt like pulling teeth for a minute there.
Finally pulled the trigger and rolled over a decent portion of my old 401k into a Gold IRA a few months back. I've been eyeing it for a while – the way the market's been acting the last few years, especially with all the inflation noise, it felt like a no-brainer to diversify outside of stocks and bonds. Had about $750k sitting in an old employer's plan that wasn't doing much for me, so I took about a third of that and moved it into physical. The process itself was surprisingly smooth, though getting the old custodian to release the funds felt like pulling teeth for a minute there. They definitely don't make it easy to take money OUT of their grasp, do they?
My advisor here in Aspen was a huge help, walked me through the whole thing. We went with a mix of Gold Eagles and some PAMP Suisse bars. Feels pretty damn good knowing a significant chunk of my retirement is in tangible assets, not just numbers on a screen that can vanish overnight. I’m a real estate guy, so I appreciate something I can actually see and hold (even if it’s technically in a depository). Plus, given the geopolitical instability, I just sleep better knowing I'm hedged against some serious downside risk. What have some of you guys bought? Any specific recommendations for when I look to add more?
I've been playing around with that Gold IRA Calculator online to project potential returns and the future value of the IRA based on different gold price scenarios. It’s a neat tool to visualize how this allocation could impact my overall portfolio down the line. Obviously, past performance isn'tindicative of future results, but it's good to have a target, you know?
For those of you who've done a similar rollover, how are you feeling about it now? Any regrets, or are you doubling down? I’m thinking about moving another $200k over in the next year or so, depending on how things shake out. Always good to hear other perspectives from people who've actually been through the process and have some skin in the game.
